Sharman Networks said its Kazaa file-sharing software was on track to set a record Friday as it becomes the most-popular free program on the Web with over 230 million downloads. Record labels suffered a setback in April when a federal judge ruled song-swap networks Grokster and Morpheus should not be shut since they do not control what is traded on them.

Kazaa, which is involved in a separate lawsuit with the recording industry, also distributes licensed files, including music, movies, games and software through a partnership with a company called Altnet.
