While you need a WiFi connection to use it as a phone, the TruPhone application, combined with a WiFi connection, is just like a regular phone, and works great. The iPod Touch is only $229, and doesn't require phone activation or monthly charges. I have a mobile router that plugs in to my USB broad band wireless modem. I pay $59 a month for broadband wireless from Verizon Wireless, which works great, and works everywhere. It can be used with any computer with a USB port available, and, at $20 a month less than AT&T coverage on the iPhone, is a superior buy. The superiority of the Verizon network and service is a bonus. When I am mobile, I just turn on the Personal HotSpot (PHS), and, voila, a VOIP phone that will call anyone anywhere, cheap. And, you can connect up to 15 iPod Touches to the local network created by the USB modem.
