On AT&T Wireless' GSM/GRPS network, the peak data transfer rate is 115 kilobits per second (kbps), and the average user can reach 35 to 40 kbps, he said. But once AT&T Wireless upgrades its network software to EDGE, those speeds will increase threefold. Similar speed increases will occur for CDMA operators moving to 1XRTT networks.
