Yahoo! News - Now Playing: T-Mobile Video Messaging

With the launch of its video messaging service, T-Mobile has claimed a first in the U.S. wireless market by enabling customers to record and send short multimedia clips from a mobile phone.

The service is currently available only on the Nokia 3650 handset, which T-Mobile is offering for US$200 (with rebate) at its Web site or by phone order. With the phone, subscribers can record 10 seconds of action and sound and send the clip as an e-mail attachment.

The new video messaging service allows users to record, save and play back video only sequences at 15 fps, up to a maximum of 95 kilobytes in size, on their mobile phone. A sound clip or a message in text form can be sent with the video message as attachments. The recipient will require the relevant media players (e.g. Real One) in order to play back the video message and attachments on his or her PC. On June 3, 2003 Apple announced support for the .3gp file format allowing the production of Quicktime 6.3 movie clips that can be saved in the .3gp format and emailed and played back on this Nokia 3650 handset.

Customers will need to subscribe to a $2.99 a month service to transmit data, photos and video. The service allows 10 videos or 30 photos to be transmitted per month. Subscribers also will have to pay a monthly service fee for voice services. See T-Mobile Nokia Overview/Features including bluetooth, AOL instant messaging, etc. Add Your Comments or Links
